10 Tips for Booking Cheap Flights

Airfare can swing a lot for the exact same seat. You can’t control the market, but you can control when you search, where you fly from, and which extras you pay for. These habits consistently lead to cheaper flights.

1. Be flexible on dates

Flying a day earlier or later, or midweek instead of on a weekend, often lowers the fare. If your search tool shows a calendar or flexible-date view, use it.

2. Check nearby airports

A larger hub or a secondary airport an hour away can be much cheaper. Add the cost and time of getting there before you decide.

3. Book in the sweet spot

Very last-minute fares tend to be expensive, and booking extremely early doesn’t always help either. For most trips, start watching prices a few months ahead and book when you see a fare you’re comfortable with.

4. Compare the total price

Low basic fares may exclude seat selection, carry-on bags, or checked luggage. Add up what you actually need before comparing airlines.

5. Travel light

Fitting everything in a personal item or carry-on can save bag fees on both legs. See our carry-on packing list.

6. Consider one-way and mixed itineraries

Two one-way tickets on different airlines sometimes beat a round trip. Just leave enough connection time if the flights aren’t on the same booking.

7. Look at connections, not just nonstops

A one-stop flight can cost far less than a nonstop. Decide how much your time is worth before paying the premium.

8. Set price alerts

Price alerts let you watch a route without searching every day, so you can act when the fare dips.

9. Use points and loyalty programs

Free airline loyalty programs and travel credit card points can cover a ticket or upgrade. Even occasional travelers should sign up.

10. Don’t forget the ground costs

Airport parking and transfers add up. Check car parking options in advance, and line up a hotel close to transit.
